For centuries, oregano tea has been used as a natural remedy for numerous health issues in many parts around the world. Oregano is rich in many important compounds such as quercetin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, eriocitrin, apigenin, and luteolin.
It also contains some phytonutrients like thymol and rosmarinic acid which have powerful antioxidant properties. These antioxidants have the ability to prevent oxygen-based damages to cells throughout the human body. Many recent studies have found that oregano has a stronger antioxidant impact in the body when compared to the two synthetic antioxidants that are commonly added to processed foods – BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene).
In addition to this, a study published in the International Food Journal of Sciences and Nutrition in 2007 has also shown that regular consumption of oregano tea significantly reduces LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.
Some studies have also discovered that oregano has strong cancer-fighting properties due to the presence of the phytochemical Quercetin, which is able to kill cancer cells.
A 2008 study published in the “Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology” has found that oregano extract improved indicators of cancer in laboratory animals who suffered from colon cancer. According to the researchers, this is due to the powerful antioxidant properties of oregano. Even though these studies are very encouraging, the researchers added that there is a need for confirmation in clinical studies with human subjects.
